I think it's always been like that.

As a kid, I was able to actually sit inside the Ecto-1 they had (one of the actors had left the door unlocked) when me and my brother found it parked behind some backlot after hours.

I know right,if they do stand up against us they will face total protonic reversal,so it's only logical that they leave us alone.
